Telling your story in natural, unposed and timeless French wedding photography filled
with personality and emotion, captured by Phil Salisbury
I’ve worked throughout the UK, and travelled all over the world capturing destination weddings…There’s something about a wedding in France though, isn’t there? The romance of it all,the landscapes, the language, the food, THE WINE! Whether you get married in a vineyard, an impressive French Chateau, a charming little town in the hills, or a vibrant city – as your wedding photographer in France, it’s my job to capture those views, document the emotion, and create a timeless memory of a magical moment (or a whole weekend!)
My passport never gets time to gather dust and I’m always on the look out for my next adventure to photograph weddings in locations across the world. The variety of landscapes and venues across France continue to inspire me, and meeting adventurous couples who want to celebrate in their own unique ways is a major highlight of my job.
Perhaps you already know where you’ll be getting married in France, maybe you are looking for venue inspiration, or it might all be a distant dream at the moment and you’re just seeing what’s out there – read on my friends, I’ve got you!
While I’m on the topic of inspiration, if a destination wedding is your vibe but you aren’t settled on where – check out some of my other blogs from weddings around the world in the most epic places, and with awesome people.
I’ll keep adding to this list too, so there will be plenty more blogs to scroll through as I aim to photograph weddings in as many countries as possible!
Let’s be honest, the list should really be endless – but I’ve narrowed it down to some of the most popular French wedding destinations, the places I get asked about all the time, and a few hidden gems to consider.
Iconic, dramatic, fashionable, and OH SO French! From the twinkling Eiffel Tower to the historic cobbled streets in the famous hilltop district of Montmartre – where do we even start? My recommendation for Paris is to explore and find places that you connect with and want to be part of your story. I recommend starting early for photos in busy tourist areas, so we can beat the crowds and find some moments of calm.
A walk along the Seine, a croissant in a café, let’s experience a little bit of Parisian life, get inspired by the hustle and bustle, meet some people, dance on bridges, and chase the golden hour light! It’s not just about the views either, I’ll photograph the romance and the fun as you celebrate together, capturing the tender moments and little looks between you as you soak up the atmosphere and celebrate.
The sun, sea, and laid-back glamour of the French Riviera is what dreams are made of. You can saunter through the streets of Saint-Tropez or Cannes, take in the old-world charm of Nice, or explore pretty pastel colour towns and villages, and everything in between. The proximity to Italy makes it super accessible travel wise, and extra chic! As with all my South of France wedding photography, I love the opportunities this gives me to capture timeless elegance, and effortless beauty.
The French Riviera is the ideal place for elegant and relaxed celebrations, gathering your family and friends together, grabbing your sunglasses and a glass of champagne and living THE life! You could even grab that glass of champagne in the back of an old convertible, or as you walk barefoot on the sand… just saying!
Bordeaux is where the calm of the French countryside meets the elegance of vineyard hideaways. If you want a weekend-long celebration with plenty of gorgeous food and wine, this is where you’ll find it. As a relaxed, documentary South of France wedding photographer, I love the chilled vibes of a vineyard wedding. While you are lost in conversations and social dinners around long, rustic tables in pretty courtyards, I’ll be capturing those moments and your story.
The area is popular with couples looking to extend their wedding celebrations, hiring exclusive venues for multiple days with their loved ones, often gathered from across the world. Bordeaux is an unforgettable destination, full of romance, rustic charm, and unbelievable flavour!
We’re in castle country now! The Loire Valley is like stepping into your own private fairytale and there’s no shortage of variety either. The mixture of grandeur (those WOW they’re getting married in a castle moments) and the romance of soft light, and countryside views make it a dream to capture French wedding photography here!
From the second you arrive you’ll be treated like royalty, and surrounded by beauty. Tree-lined driveways, towers and turrets, spiral staircases, shimmering moats and lakes - the Châteaux of the Loire Valley bring the cinematic drama!
Provence is the place to be for idyllic scenery and a treat for the senses. As a South of France wedding photographer, this is one of the areas that I’d say gives you that quintessentially French experience. There’s something for everyone here, from luxury villas in picturesque landscapes to quaint villages, rustic farmhouses, and exclusive countryside retreats.
The famous Provence lavender fields are packed with fragrance and colour, when you look back at your wedding photos, you’ll see the gorgeousness in all its glory and you’ll never forget that scent. The fields bloom from the middle of June to the middle of August, so July is prime lavender time in Provence and the Valensole Plateau is one of the most famous locations to visit.
It was HARD to limit this list as I could ramble on for ages about the best places for French wedding photography – but I definitely couldn’t leave The French Alps off the list! If you are an adventurous couple with a love of all things outdoors, then the spectacular scenery and wild beauty of the French Alps are really going to appeal to you.
The lakes and mountains are an epic setting for windswept vows, and there are plenty of luxurious venues to host weddings in every season. A full wedding party skiing down a hill, a bride busting out awesome snowboard moves, and dips in glacial lakes to cure post-wedding hangovers… If you want wild, you got it! If you seek serenity and calm you can also find an alpine retreat to escape and relax in nature – this is getting married in France at its most awesome!
We can search endlessly for the perfect location, the ideal spot for wedding photos in France, or the best place to gather your loved ones to celebrate… but in the end, it’s all about YOU! Find somewhere you feel happy, somewhere you can celebrate and feel completely relaxed and be yourselves.
My job is to capture all of the emotion while you are making memories, and my style is all about creating timeless, authentic images that will keep those feelings preserved for you to revisit time and time again. I’ll photograph your day as it happened, in a glorious setting, capturing things you might not even have seen or noticed at the time. Focus on your wedding day, your person, your guests, and having the time of your lives in your own little paradise.
Whether you are looking for French wedding photography or want to chat about other locations in the UK or abroad, I’d love to hear more about you and your story. I’ll share my top tips, fave venues, and can recommend a few superstar suppliers too if you need anything, anywhere!
